"In 1904, Claude Guy and his brothers John, Edwin and Bernard McGuire formed a partnership that they called "Guy Brothers". With an initial investment of $500 they purchased a 10 acre parcel of land at the head of St. Clements Bay in Clements, Maryland where they established a general mercantile business. Guy Brothers offered not only groceries, but other items such as furniture, clothing, fertilizer, farm implements and other farm supplies. Claude later purchased the stock held by his brothers and became the sole proprietor of Guy Brothers. In 1918, the business expanded to include the sale of Chevrolet automobiles, which later evolved into the establishment of Guy Chevrolet."(Guy 1997) It was also here that Guy Distributing Company (Anheuser-Busch Distributor) and Guy Brothers Implements (Massey-Ferguson Retailer) got their start.
In 1954, Al Francis Guy, Claude's youngest son, returned from a tour of duty in the Air Force and went to work for his brother Wink at Guy Brothers Implements. In 1961, Al and his wife Micie purchased the small engine portion of the farm implement business from Wink and established Guy Brothers Marine. With this purchase came the rights to the sales and service of the following: Massey Ferguson Lawn Equipment, Lawn Boy Lawn Mowers, Oliver and Scott-McCulloch Outboard Motors and Homelite Chainsaws and Waterpumps. In 1964 Guy Brothers Marine purchased the franchise rights to distribute and service Evinrude Outboard Motors.
Over the years Guy Brothers Marine has introduced several new products to its clientele such as: Ariens (1965) and Echo (1972) Lawn and Garden Equipment, GrassHopper Lawn Mowers (1978), Scag Commercial Lawn Mowers (), White Outdoor Products (), Atlantic (1987) and Sandpiper () Boats and Load Rite Trailers (1996). GBM is also a factory certified servicing dealer for the following small engine manufacturers: Briggs and Stratton (), Kohler () and Tecumseh ().
As Al and Micie's business grew so did their family. Together they raised nine children; five boys and four girls. Two of their sons, Francis and Mike, followed in their fathers footsteps and went to work at "the shop". Francis began working at the shop as a teenager and became a full-time employee upon his graduation from high school in 1980. Francis has worked hard to establish his reputation as a highly regarded and accomplished outboard motor mechanic. The fact that OMC recognizes Guy Brothers Marine as an Elite Servicing Dealer is a direct reflection of Francis' commitment to his work and OMC products.
Mike's story is very similar to Francis'. Mike started at the shop as a teen and he too went to work full-time after graduating in 1986. Since Francis had a good handle on the outboards, Mike took to the task of learning the small engine products such as lawnmowers, string trimmers, chainsaws and the like. Mike takes pride in his abilities and strives to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction through the integrity of his service qualifications and knowledge of our lawn equipment products.
Not all of Francis' and Mike's work is done at the shop. They both maintain a commitment to providing high quality service by attending product seminars and updates. This includes service seminars that emphasize diagnostic techniques and repair methodologies as well as introductions to new products and technologies.
